7th EAA Iberian Chapter Meeting - Last Minute Recommendations

Dear alumni,

Please, find below the last minute recommendations and Updated Programme for our Next Meeting, to be held at CNIC, Madrid, on June 8th, 2012.

[from an e-mail written by María del Mar Vivanco, June 4th, 2012]

Dear all,

The next EMBL Alumni meeting in Madrid is quickly approaching and there are a few things that I would like you to know before we meet in Madrid this Friday 8th:

- I am enclosing the final programme (please see attached [NB: updated version follows]). This includes a visit to the CNIC facilities at the end of the day. They would like me to tell them how many people will be interested in this visit (for organisation purposes). Please let me know if you plan to attend.

- From the CNIC they also tell me that it is necessary for you to have your DNI or passport with you, otherwise you will not be allowed to get in. They suggest to prepare a list in advance to make the entrance faster and more efficient in the morning. If you want, you can send me your DNI or passport number so that they will have the access cards ready in advance.

- They also inform me that there is no parking available for private cars and in the street the parking is not free.

- Those of you giving a presentation, please bring it ready in a pen-drive (or DVD or CD, if easier for you).

I think that this is all for now. Those of you travelling from outside Madrid have a safe journey. I look forward to meeting you in Madrid.

Best wishes,

7th EAA Iberian Chapter Meeting - Additional Information

Dear alumni,

As the date for our Next Meeting approaches, Maria has sent to us new info plus the detailed programme. Please, note that the programme will be posted later today in a different entry. You can find the details below.

[from an e-mail written by María del Mar Vivanco, May 11th, 2012]

Dear EMBL Alumni,

Please find attached the programme for our next EAA Meeting in Madrid (CNIC) on June 8th. As you can see, there is an interesting mixture of science and discussion about subjects that were highlighted as important in the recent questionnaire.

I hope you will find the programme interesting and be able to make it to the meeting.

Many of you have already confirmed attendance, if you have not done so yet, but would like to participate, please let me know, I would just like to make sure that there is enough coffee and food for everybody. If you have already said no, please ignore this, and sorry for sending it again.

In addition, the EMBL Alumni Association has been very understanding with our situation and has agreed to help us with 2.500 euros, so we will be able to cover PART of our expenses. If you are going to claim some of your expenses, please remember that you will need to keep receipts and invoices for transport. Where participants require reimbursement for petrol, we would need a hand-written confirmation of payment from them, together with their receipt from the petrol station.

I look forward to seeing you in Madrid.

Best wishes,

Maria

7th EAA Iberian Chapter Meeting - Madrid, June 8th, 2012

Dear alumni,

Our Next Meeting will be finally held in Madrid, on June 8th, 2012. Please find the details below.

[from an e-mail written by María del Mar Vivanco, February 24th, 2012]

Dear EMBL Alumni,

Thank you to all of you who replied to the questionnaire I sent last December. Based on the answers and plenty of discussions we have decided to celebrate the next meeting in Madrid, Friday June 8th.

As attractive as a meeting in Mallorca sounded (I know some of you are disappointed), getting there for just one day was difficult for some people and many others could not afford to expand the meeting to two days. Therefore, Jose Luis de la Pompa very kindly agreed to host our meeting at the CNIC (gracias Jose Luis!). We hope that everyone will find it easier to make it there.

I am happy to inform you that the EMBL Alumni Association [EAA] has generously agreed to assign some funds to help us support this meeting. In addition, Iain Mattaj has agreed, once again, to find time out of his busy schedule to come to the meeting. I think that this reflects the interest that EMBL has in the Alumni Association and his appreciation for our Chapter meetings being (together with the Greek one) one of the most active and long running.

Many of you showed interest in having a meeting that includes not only great science, but also the possibility to discuss funding opportunities, facilities and services in our institutions and at the EMBL that could be used by our community, science policy, collaborative activities, networking, lobbying, etc.

Please, let me know, as soon as you can, if you are planning to attend. Please feel free to suggest names of potential speakers that you think would fit within our broad interests.

Looking forward to seeing you all in Madrid.

Best regards,

Maria

Iberian Chapter meeting postponed to March 2012

Dear alumni,

Our Meeting has been postponed to March 2012. Please find the details below.

[from an e-mail written by María del Mar Vivanco, October 14th, 2011]

Dear Alumni,

At the end of September we wrote to you regarding the EMBL Alumni Iberic Chapter meeting in Mallorca.

Many of you wrote back supporting the idea of having and open and deep discussion about a number of important issues that we will be facing in the immediate future. Unfortunately, due to the short notice of the announcement, few could confirm their attendance.

We believe that it is important to engage as many alumni as possible in these initiative, therefore, we have decided to postpone the meeting to March next year.

In the meantime more people will have the opportunity to participate in the preparatory discussions and to suggest different topics for the conference.

Our intention is to get funding to support the meeting, but for our actions to be efficient it would be necessary to have an estimate of the number of potential attendees. We will follow soon with a short questionnaire about content and future plans for the conference.

We apologize to those of you who have made plans to attend at the end of October, but the meeting is simply postponed, not cancelled, and it is going to be even better!

All the best,

Daniel and Maria

7th EMBL Alumni Iberian Chapter Meeting

Dear alumni,

Arrangements are being made for our 7th Meeting to be held in Palma de Mallorca, from Friday 28th to Sunday 30th of October, 2011. Please find the details below.

[from an e-mail written by María del Mar Vivanco, October 4th, 2011]

Dear Alumni,

This year EMBL Alumni Iberic Chapter meeting will take place in the Hotel Barceló Albatros in Palma de Mallorca during the last weekend of October.

Thanks to funds provided by the Government of the Balearic Islands, we will be able to change the format and content of the meeting.

Accommodation costs and meals are covered by the organization, thus attendees will only have to pay for transportation. Participants would be able to arrive on Friday 28th and leave on Sunday 30th. Hotel rooms are for double occupancy, so you could bring your significant other at no extra cost (*).

Sessions will run from Saturday 29th, morning and afternoon, to Sunday 30th in the morning.

Our intention this year is to talk not just about our results and projects, but also about all other things that make our work possible. We believe that in the present economic environment this is a very important matter. In this context, our intention is to have at least one session dedicated to talks and discussions about funding opportunities, facilities and services in our institutions and at the EMBL that could be used by our community, science policy, collaborative activities, networking, lobbying, etc.

We believe that we, the EMBL alumni, have the potential to influence science and science policy in Spain, or at least, to benefit from sharing and optimizing the use of resources that are presently underused, or even ignored by the majority of us.

We are happy to say that Iain Mattaj has agreed to take time out of his busy schedule to come to the meeting and give us his vision about the current situation.

We have also invited a representative of CDTI who will discuss funding opportunities for the next two years of the 7th Framework Program and prospects for the 8th; and a representative from the MICINN who will talk about the Ley de la Ciencia (we are waiting for confirmation).

At this stage, it would be great if you could let us know if you are planning to attend, and what would be the topic(s) you would like to discuss during the meeting or if you would like to present your work, so we can make more detailed arrangements.

Looking forward to seeing you all in Mallorca.

Best regards,

Daniel Bachiller and Maria Vivanco

Dear EMBL alumni in Spain and Portugal

As many of you may know, the EMBO meeting is scheduled to take place in Barcelona from September 4-7. We'd like to take advantage of the fact that several ex-EMBLers will be at the event to organize the 6th meeting of the EMBL Alumni Association's Iberian local chapter. The exact date and schedule are still to be determined, but we'd appreciate if you could get back to us and let us know...

  • if you would be interested in attending
  • and if you'd like to give a short talk about your work
We'll also have someone from EMBL present to give us an update on current affairs at the lab, as well as a discussion session on topics relevant to our community.

Please let us know if you think you'll be able to make it by Thursday, July 22 at the latest.

Bilbao Meeting Report

Dear alumni,

Please find below a message from María del Mar Vivanco, reporting about our latest meeting held at Bilbao last September 7th.

Iberic Chapter Meeting, Bilbao, September 7th: Some Conclusions.

[from an e-mail written by María del Mar Vivanco]

Dear all,

All the participants in the last EMBL Alumni meeting in Bilbao were sorry that you could not make it. However, I thought that you may like to hear that the meeting worked out very well. In principle 30 people had agreed to participate although at the last minute 9 people had to cancel for different reasons.

On Friday 7th we enjoyed a lovely sunny day, excellent scientific presentations with lots of questions and an intense but productive (we hope!) discussion about different Alumni issues. I am enclosing a summary of some of the topics discussed (fyi) and our suggestions to try and improve the situation. [NB: please read the document appended below]

Afterwards we had a great visit to the Guggenheim museum and a pleasant walk by the river appropriately followed by a refreshing drink and a nice dinner at a club.

I hope that many of you will be able to come to the 4th EMBL Alumni [Iberic] Chapter Meeting that will take place at the IRB in Barcelona next year (Sarah Sherwood very kindly volunteered the location).

Best wishes,

Maria

3rd Iberic Chapter Meeting in Bilbao, 7th September 2007: Alumni issues

1) Some Alumni mentioned their attempts in the past to contact EMBL directly about potential use of the EMBL workshop or help with patent issues and all of them found the same lack of response.

Suggestion: perhaps this and other issues that may come up in the future should first be directed to Juan Valcarcel, as our Alumni representative, who may know better who to address in order to obtain an official response of some kind.

2) Wikipedia web page: we all thought that it is an excellent idea.

Suggestion: it could also include the Alumni association information to improve its visibility.

3) Several of us have tried to take advantage of the EMBL PhD student rejects lists and found that we are usually too late.

Suggestion: the student applicants be offered the opportunity of looking at positions available in Alumni labs as soon as they are rejected by EMBL.

4) Information on funding opportunities in Spain and Europe and tips on how to succeed.

Suggestion: inviting an experienced speaker (ie, somebody from the ANEP, FIS or ERC).

5) Interactions through blog and/or emails.

Suggestion: to replace blog with Wiki plus automatically updatable email list or to have access to the local blogs through the Alumni association web page.

6) Redefining the aims of the Iberic chapter.

Suggestion: With a smile and a dose of irony the Alumni agreed that a major benefit of the meetings is a therapeutic sharing of problems encountered with Spanish bureaucracy (see 7).

7) There is a general complaint about the paperwork involved in hiring foreigners in Spain. Even when the scientist belongs to an European country, the person has to obtain a special permit (involving queuing for hours); this does not happen to EU nationals in other European countries. In addition, Spain insists on the homologation of PhD titles obtained in European Universities, and this can involve several years of paperwork.

Suggestion: we are aware that this goes beyond the area of influence of EMBL, but perhaps if it were brought up “at the highest level” it could contribute to make a difference in the future.

Next Meeting, Bilbao

Dear alumni,

Preparations are under way for next meeting. Please find below a message from our next host, María del Mar Vivanco.

Next Iberic Chapter Meeting, Bilbao, September 7th

[from an e-mail written by María del Mar Vivanco]

Dear Alumni,

Some of you may have already received this email, but quite a few have bounced back to me, therefore, I thought I should try an alternative way to reach as many of you as possible:

The next "EMBL alumni in Spain" meeting will take place in Bilbao on Friday, September 7th. I am happy to say that Iain Mattaj has agreed to take time out of his busy schedule to come to the meeting.

The format will be similar to the one in Valencia last year (more details will be provided at a later date). At this stage it would be great if you could let me know if you think you will be attending so we can make more detailed arrangements.

If anybody is particularly interested in presenting at this meeting, please let me know.

Best regards,

Maria

Iberic Chapter at EMBL&cetera

Dear alumni,

Thanks to our fellow alumna Sarah Sherwood, a chronicle of the last meeting held in Valencia can be found within the pages of the December 2006 EMBL&cetera issue. Please find below a copy of the article and enjoy!

[from an article written by Sarah Sherwood]

Alumni hit Valencia for 2nd Iberian reunion

A warm, sunny day in late summer on the shores of the Mediterranean. With this kind of setting, it didn’t take a lot of armtwisting to convince EMBL alumni to switch off their computers, hang up their lab coats and head over to the beach for the second gathering of the EMBL Alumni Association’s Iberian local chapter. The event, attended by more than 25 alumni currently living on the Iberian peninsula, took place on 29 September at the Polytechnic University of Valencia.

After a short welcome, EMBL alumni took to the podium to discuss their latest research. Speakers included Alfonso Valencia, María del Mar Vivanco, local chapter head Juan Valcárcel, Domingo Barettino, Jordi Bernués and Alberto Muñoz. Topics ranged from protein interaction networks to vitamin D and colon cancer, and gave participants not only a great opportunity to hear the latest in Spanish science, but also to explore possibilities for collaboration. After the morning session, shop talk carried on over into lunch as the participants regrouped at a seaside restaurant, enjoying a magnificent seafood paella and other Iberian delicacies.

Between courses, alumni took stock of the progress that they have made in setting up their local chapter. Since their last meeting, the chapter website has been improved and now includes a blog, set up by Carlos Luque, to facilitate communication among members. Continuing areas of activity include completing alumni profiles in the online searchable database, which will hopefully help members identify people with particular expertises and career paths. Future projects include organising a laboratory management course and promoting visits of students and postdocs to alumni labs.

Thanks are due to reunion organisers Ramon Serrano and Angel Nebreda who delivered a top-notch programme and a truly pleasant day with friends old and new. Next year’s event is scheduled to take place in September or October in Bilbao, and will be hosted by María del Mar Vivanco at the CICbioGUNE. Current EMBL staff take note: the Iberian alumni want to strengthen ties with current EMBL staff and are planning on inviting some of you to their next reunion. If you’re interested, get in touch with María at mdmvivanco<.at.>cicbiogune.es.
